Abstract

Facial fractures are a common cause in the emergency department, which require a
general and specific approach depending on the affected region. The facial region
is made up of 14 bones (2), pairs and unpairs, which join to form the facial skeleton.
Additionally, it is divided into three portions, upper, middle and lower, which allows a
better approach into craniofacial trauma (1).
The most frequent facial fractures found in each portion are frontal sinus, orbital,
zygomatic, maxillary, and mandibular fractures, among others; each one with a different
clinical signs and radiological characteristics depending on the structures, like visual or
soft tissue injuries.
For this reason, a complete initial management is required, consisting of a complete
physical examination of the facial region, additional images to confirm the diagnosis
and classification of the fractures, as well as an appropriate medical and surgical
treatment of the patient.
