Abstract

Various spastic diseases of the musculoskeletal system, along with their associated rehabilitation
processes, have led medicine to explore different solutions to aid in the favorable management and
evolution of patients. Through this systematic literature review, we will address, from the perspectives
of physiatry and neurology, how robotics can change patient outcomes in the two most prevalent and
disabling conditions: cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and hand and wrist spasticity. While technology
will never replace medical judgment, it can become its greatest ally when properly implemented.
Some individuals may be left with irreparable functional limitations, but a robot or device
integrated into their bodies can complement or even replace the lost function, offering new hope
for practicing a more humanized medicine.
