Abstract

The management of drug therapy has always been a challenge for psychiatry; despite
the extensive evidence available supporting the efficacy and safety of psychotropic
drugs, there are social and cultural factors that have been shown throughout history
to have led to poor adherence to treatment and therefore to therapeutic failure.
The main indications of three groups of psychotropic drugs will be reviewed:
benzodiazepines, antidepressants and antipsychotics, in an attempt to establish
indications for rational use of these drugs that can impact on the reduction of
the possibility of the appearance of dependence, as well as strategies to identify
symptoms associated with it that allow the health professional to carry out timely
interventions.
