Abstract

Cholelithiasis is a pathology that in most people is asymptomatic and is evidenced as an
incidental finding in routine imaging studies for other abdominal pathologies, however
it can become symptomatic and cause complications that can be life threatening and
require emergency surgical management. In this systematic review of the literature,
we describe the clinical presentation of cholelithiasis, its diagnosis and surgical
management, emphasizing the surgical techniques developed so far, its benefits and
complications and the management of the patient after cholecystectomy.
