Abstract

Neonatal blindness, defined as total or partial loss of vision in non-premature newborns, is a
significant public health issue with profound negative consequences for pediatric patients in
their developmental, learning, and independent processes. This article reviews the embryological
development of the visual system and presents the causes, etiological characteristics, clinical
manifestations, and epidemiological burden of the primary pathologies causing neonatal blindness
in non-premature patients worldwide over the past 10 years using PRISMA guidelines.
