Abstract

Allergic rhinitis is a common disease in the modern world; its symptoms include
nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, nasal itching, and sneezing. Rhinitis, in addition to the
problems caused by the appearance of symptoms, can have a negative impact on
the quality of life of patients, interfere with sleep and cause poor performance at
school and work. A comprehensive approach could allow controlling symptoms and
reducing their negative impact on the quality of life.
Pharmacological treatment of allergic rhinitis is based on treating symptoms,
using oral and intranasal antihistamines and corticosteroids. Some patients who
do not respond to conventional medication may opt for allergen immunotherapy, a
disease-modifying therapeutic option that can be administered subcutaneously or
sublingually. Recently, treatment methods such as acupuncture, laser therapy, nasal
irrigation with saline solution and the use of surgical management have been studied.
