La rinitis alérgica es una enfermedad prevalente en el mundo moderno, entre sus síntomas se incluyen obstrucción nasal, rinorrea, prurito nasal y estornudos. En rinitis además de los efectos producidos por la presencia de los síntomas, estos pueden tener un impacto negativo en la calidad de vida de los pacientes, interferir con el sueño y generar un bajo rendimiento escolar y laboral. Un abordaje integral podría permitir un control sobre los síntomas y la disminución de su impacto negativo sobre la calidad de vida.
El tratamiento farmacológico de la rinitis alérgica se fundamenta en el manejo sintomático, como el uso de antihistamínicos y corticosteroides por vía oral e intranasal. Una proporción de pacientes que no responde a la medicación convencional puede optar por la inmunoterapia con alérgenos, opción terapéutica modificadora de la enfermedad que puede administrarse por vía subcutánea o sublingual. Recientemente se han estudiado métodos de tratamiento como acupuntura, terapia con láser, irrigación nasal con solución salina y el uso de manejo quirúrgico.
